The first part of my hula lesson began with an introduction of myself and how meaningful it was for me to be with them in the ahupuaʻa of Olowalu, where my Hawaiian ohana started their life on Maui. We chit chatted about hula while we made flower adornments for our hair. It was so nice catch up with some of the girls who were here the last time I did a hula lesson with them. With our toes in the sand and the sun shining we found a nice spot under the shade of a near by Keawe tree to learn hula. The women learned to move their hula hips, roll their fingers and convey meaning to the Hawaiian words with their body. Something special happened that day, women were united with the Hawaiian culture on the unique island of Maui, with me Maui Hula Wahine.

I had the pleasure of taking lei making and hula lessons twice with Nalani (a year apart). Once with my daughter and granddaughter a year ago and most recently with my girlfriend. Both times it was the highlight of our trip. Nalani is an excellent teacher and dancer. It was very convenient that she came to our condo each time and did something new and different to enrich our experience. Nalani explains the moves and how it relates to the history of Maui. Each gesture says something and brings more meaning to the dance. Nalani is not only very talented, she is also very patience and accommodating. I plan to take a lesson every time I visit Maui because of the wonderful memories it has brought me. I highly recommend Nalani to anyone visiting Maui and want to enrich their time while visiting the island. Anyone can visit the island and go home with a tan but what they'll have after their time spend with Nalani will be much more special and long lasting.
