On this Hawaii trip, they rode in a helicopter to Hana, and requested to spend time with a local from Maui. Their concierge from Maui Concierge Service suggested a hula lesson with Maui Hula Wahine! The ladies learned how to braid flower bracelets with tī leaf and plumerias. I am so grateful for their company and their genuine appreciation for the Hawaiian culture.

The first part of my hula lesson began with an introduction of myself and how meaningful it was for me to be with them in the ahupuaʻa of Olowalu, where my Hawaiian ohana started their life on Maui. We chit chatted about hula while we made flower adornments for our hair. It was so nice catch up with some of the girls who were here the last time I did a hula lesson with them. With our toes in the sand and the sun shining we found a nice spot under the shade of a near by Keawe tree to learn hula. The women learned to move their hula hips, roll their fingers and convey meaning to the Hawaiian words with their body. Something special happened that day, women were united with the Hawaiian culture on the unique island of Maui, with me Maui Hula Wahine. |
